Why Your Photos don’t “Have” to be Good

They need to be Important.

Happy New Year, Everybody. I hope 2024 brings you peace and happiness.

In today’s post and video, I talk about my motto that “Photos don’t ‘have’ to be good, they just need to be Important”.

Your Photos Don’t Have to Be Good - YouTube Video

Live life beyond your Mobile Phone.

Often, we get caught up in the idea that photos need to be perfect. But here's the truth - photos don't need to be good; they must be important. Each picture tells a story, your family's story, and that's what makes it invaluable.

In the age of technology, our mobile phones have become our most accessible tools for capturing life. They're always with us, ready to snap a selfie or a quick shot of a special moment. And in the right situation, they're perfect for those instant memories, especially when it's all about capturing the spontaneity of life.

Living behind these digital masks, we can sometimes lose real life's raw, unfiltered beauty. The laughter lines, untamed hair, and chaotic backgrounds bring authenticity to our memories. They remind us that life isn't about perfection; it's about the perfectly imperfect moments that we share.

While mobile phones and selfies have their place in the tapestry of our recorded lives, they shouldn't always be our go-to. Encourage yourself and your loved ones to occasionally step out from behind the lens.

Engage with life directly, without the urge to filter or adjust. By doing so, you're not just capturing life but living it.

Remember Light, Composition & Moment

As photographers, we're not just pressing a button; we're capturing light, composition, and, most importantly, the moment.

Light breathes life into your photos, creating an ambience that resonates with the moment's feeling.

Composition helps narrate your story, guiding the viewer's eye to what's essential.

And the moment, that fleeting, irreplaceable slice of time, is what we're all trying to hold onto."

But it's not just about the technicalities. It's about being there, present, and ready. As family photographers, we have a responsibility. We're the recorders of our family history, ensuring that moments don't fade into oblivion.

Think about the candid moments, the laughter, the tears, and the mundane everyday life. These are the moments that, when looked back upon, create the tapestry of our family legacy.

Your camera is the tool, but your perspective and presence truly breathe life into each photo."

The Importance of “Now”

Every second that ticks by is a moment lost to time, but as photographers, we have the unique opportunity to freeze time, to hold onto now forever. And when it comes to family, every 'now' is precious.

And so I encourage you to document the milestones and the quiet, in-between moments too. The messy breakfast tables, afternoon naps, and shared understanding glances. These are the threads that weave the rich fabric of family life.

But with this great tool comes great responsibility.

As the keepers of family history, we must be ethical and respectful. Understand the power of the image and the stories they carry forward. It's a delicate balance between documenting and intruding, so always be mindful of the boundaries.

A Note on the Editing of these Phots

These images have been edited with my recently released Advanced Lightroom Presets. These Lightroom presets are more than just slider adjustments. They are based on meticulously crafted profiles to give your images a timeless cinematic quality.

With just a few clicks, you can achieve a nostalgic, vintage vibe or a contemporary film look, making your editing process efficient and artistically satisfying.

Sometimes it feels hard.

Yes, it takes effort. There will be days when picking up the camera feels like a chore. There will be moments when you'd rather be a participant than an observer. But remember, every effort you make is a building block in the legacy you're creating.

To make it easier, always have a camera at hand. Keep a bag ready for every trip, every outing, every spontaneous adventure. Make it as effortless as possible to capture those fleeting moments.

And don't ever underestimate the power of the mundane. An ordinary evening in front of the television with your family, the routine of a daily dinner, the quiet moments of togetherness - these too have their stories, as profound and touching as any holiday or adventure.

These moments make up most of our lives, and they deserve to be remembered and cherished.

Embrace the effort, embrace the routine, and embrace the mundane. It's all part of your family's unique story.

With every photo you take, you're not just freezing a moment in time; you're acknowledging its importance in the tapestry of your life. You're saying, 'This matters. This moment, this feeling, this ordinary day - it all matters.

So, keep your camera close, your heart open, and your eyes ready to see the beauty in the everyday.

Document the laughter, the tears, the quiet days, and the loud ones. It's a journey, a labour of love, but one that's immeasurably worth it. Ultimately, these photographs will be your legacy, a treasure trove of memories for you and your loved ones to cherish forever.
