Street Photography Themes (Red)

One of the things we discuss a lot on my Fuji Workshops is the idea of Street Photography Themes.

I'm a huge believer in giving yourself objectives when shooting.  If I don't have an objective in mind, then I tend to just become a regular snapshooter.

If I have a theme in mind, and this is true whether shooting Street or as a wedding photographer I find I shoot less, observe more, and get more keeper images.

One of the themes we usually start out with when thinking about Street Photography Themes is; looking for a primary colour.

In this case, the colour is red as you can see.

My idea when planning the workshops, and when shooting on them myself is not for my students to make award winning images there and then, but for them to go away with new techniques, new understanding, new motivation and of course ideas for shooting.

When I suggest a primary colour, I want my students to hopefully find images where, when the image if viewed, the eye is drawn immediately to the primary colour - and in this case it is red.

Of course,  all the way through the workshops we talk about the trinity of a good picure;

• Light

• Composition

• Moment

Armed with the knowledge that these three things together will make an engaging image, its important that we don't just "snap" anything that is red.

There has to be something else that holds the image together.  That maybe a good use of light, or just a quirky moment.

I currently have a couple of spots left on my final workshop available at the moment which is in Paris in September.  Barcelona and London are all full right now.
