Summer Outtakes with the Fujifilm GFX 50S & Kodalith Film Simulation

GFX50S-Images-1-3.jpg

OK, after deliberating over purchasing a Fujifilm GFX 50S here....err, and here.....and umm....here...oh, and here too I've finally made a decision and I've put an order in for my camera.

I couldn't really not in the end.  My walls at home and in the studio are covered with the incredible prints that are made from the Fujifilm GFX 50S.

I mentioned in my post about prints from the Fujifilm GFX 50S that I actually had the wind knocked out of me when I first saw the depth and quality, printed, from this camera.

A note about the processing these Fujifilm GFX 50S images:

I've been using Alien Skin Exposure for a lot of my personal and social family photography for a long time.  Alien Skin Exposure X3 has really moved the tool forward and it's a very good standalone editor, as well as a great plugin for Lightroom.

I have a soft spot for the Kodalith film simulation that is part of ASE and all of these images have been run through that.

According to the National Portrait Gallery, Kodalith is:

"A type of photographic printing paper coated with an orthochromatic emulsion which gives a high contrast print with very dense blacks when processed in Kodalith developer. It is a material normally used for graphics artwork which, however, can be used to give a range of unusual effects if development is controlled. "

I think the Kodalith simulation in ASE is beautiful and whilst it's not going to be to everybody's tastes, I love the dense blacks and shadows and I think it gives a great representation of the image quality derived from the Fujifilm GFX 50S.

Fujifilm GFX 50S vs X-Series:

Again, I've mentioned this before, but even though I've 'finally' taken the plunge and ordered a Fujifilm GFX 50S, there is no way that it will replace my X-Series cameras.  My wedding work, specifically, demands extremely quick to focus, light and small cameras.

The Fujifilm GFX 50S will compliment my existing setup for weddings and general reportage work.  Where the camera is already working for me (and believe me, this camera has to make money) is with my day in the life and family portraiture work.

I've continued to be amazed by the camera and whilst taking a break from editing weddings, I meandered my way through some more images taken through the summer on the camera.

These are what I would call "outtakes".  I don't think I've shown these before on this site and they are personal, family pictures which make me smile.

And if a picture makes me smile, then it's done its job for me.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.  Feel free to leave a comment below and I always do my best to reply to any questions.

If you are in the UK, you can purchase the GFX now (it's in stock I believe) from WEX Photographic.

And finally, my last Wedding Photojournalism Workshop of the year is going to be on 7th December in North London.
